FSLN - Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional

The Sandinista National Liberation Front is named after Augusto Sandino (1895-1934), a pioneer in the fight against the Somoza family, who established a nearly continuous dictatorship from 1937 to 1979. After the fall of Anastasio Somoza, the FSLN, registered on 13 September 1983 and led by the charismatic and controversial Daniel Ortega (b. 1945) ruled Nicaragua from 1979 to 1990 and has been again ruling the country since 2006.

Due the authoritarian evolution of Ortega's rule, the FSLN flag (with letters) is used not only in more or less spontaneous demonstrations, but also side by side with the national flag in official events.
Some flags seen in demonstrations have the white letters outlined in red.

I have encountered another FSLN-derived flag. It is the Territorio Victorioso de Analfabetismo (Victorious Analphabetism Territory) flag seen at Spanish wikipedia. It is a flag of a Sandinista government campaign to eradicate Analphabetism (Illiteracy) in the country. This flag appeared in the neighborhood Laura Sofía Olivas Paz of the Municipality of Ocotal.

Juventud Sandinista 19 de Julio

[Flag of Juventus Sandinista 19 de Julio] image by Ivan Sache, 15 May 2021

Juventus Sandinista 19 de Julio (JS 19 de Julio) is the youth organization of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), Nicaragua's ruling party.
The organization was established on 23 August 1979 in the aftermath of the overthrowing of Anastasio Somoza's regime by the FSLN, effective on 19 July 1979 after the fall of Managua.

The flag of JS 19 de Julio is diagonally divided red-black (the colors of the FSLN) from the upper hoist to the lower fly, charged in the center with the organization's circular emblem.
The emblem of JS 19 de Julio features a young man wearing a white shirt and black trousers, holding a rifle in the right hand and a book in the left hand. Behind him, a banderole composed of the Nicaraguan flag (without emblem) and of the FSLN flag (without lettering). The emblem's rim is inscribed "Estudio Defensa Producción" (Study Defense Production) in the upper part and "JS 19 DE Julio" in the lower par, all in black letters.

FNT - Frente Nacional de los Trabadajores

[Flag of Sandinistas] image by Ivan Sache, 15 February 2008

"Frente Nacional de los Trabadajores" (FNT, Workers' National Front), founded on 28 April 1990, is  both a coordination of workers' union and a political party. Of Sandinist allegiance and often allied with FNSL, FNT won six seats in the national parliament in 2000; after the 2004 municipal elections, FNT had 11 Mayors and 110 Municipal Councillors in 62 municipalities. FNT is divided in eight workers' organizations, 76 federations and 665 unions; its membership increased from 137,000 to 161,000 from 1999 to 2005. Web site at www.fnt.org.ni.
The symbols of FNT are the red flag with the acronym FNT in black letters placed in the middle, together with the map of Nicaragua and the monument to the Popular Fighter (Source: www.fnt.org.ni/MisionyVision.html).
After the images shown on the FNT website, I understand the above sentence as a description of both the flag (red with FNT) and the emblem (with  the map and the monument) of the movement. Image of the flag is after the photographies taken during the VIth Congress of the CTCP. CTCP is "Confederación de Trabadajores for Cuenta Propia" (Independent Workers' Confederation); the flag of CTCP, also shown on the photographs, is white with the CTCP emblem, made of a green map of Nicaragua charges with the black letters CTCP-FNT and surrounded by a ring charged with the name of the confederation in black letters. (Source: www.fnt.org.ni/gvicongreso.html).
"Confederación General UNE" ("Union Nacional de Empleados" - Employees' National Union) has a white flag with the black and white emblem of the union in the middle, surrounded by CONFEDERACIÓN GENERAL, above the emblem , in an arched pattern, and UNE, below the emblem, all the lettering being in red. The flag, which has a golden fringe, can be seen on photographs taken during a press conference by UNE.
Several other flags, belonging to confederations or unions member of FNT, can be seen on photographs shown on the FNT website, but the images are too small to be accurately described and assigned.
Ivan Sache, 15 February 2008

The party uses the flag with letters "FNT" either serif or (maybe more recently) sans serif.

PC - Partido Conservador

image by António Martins, 21 October 2002

image by Antóio Martins, 21 October 2002

PC - Partido Conservador has two flags:
A plain green as in www.cse.gob.ni and a green with initials as in www.ideay.net.ni.
Dov Gutterman, 26 Febuary 2002

The flag of the Partido Conservador is shown in two variants, one plain green and the other one green with the white letters PC.
The website of the Partido Conservador has the status of the party www.partidoconservador.org.ni:
Article 3. The Partido Conservador has for emblem a green flag. It is identified by the acronym PC. The shield of the party is the torch of liberty surrounded by a circle bearing the legend: Partido Conservador and the motto: Dios Orden Justicia (God Order Justice).
Ivan Sache, 10 March 2005

The Partido Conservador, Nicaragua's oldest political party, was established on 27 October 1851 as Partido Legitimista. The PC ruled the country from 1910, after the US invasion, to the 1923 liberal revolution.

The (re-founded) PC was registered on 21 February 1992 as the merger of the Partido Conservador Demócrata de Nicaragua (PCDN) and the Partido Social Conservatismo (PSOC), originally called Partido Conservador de Nicaragua (PCN).
In the 2016 general election, the PC secured 1 out of the 92 seats at the National Assembly and another 1 at the Central American Parliament.

There is no evidence of the use of the flag with letters, which could be removed. Our old reports clearly refer to drawings only, while the party's Statutes prescribe a plain green flag, which is featured on several photos. Moreover, the "PC" logo has changed.

PLC - Partido Liberal Constitucionalista

image by António Martins, 21 October 2002

image by António Martins, 21 October 2002

PLC - Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (Constitutional Liberal Party, conservative)  is the leading party in NI.
Two versions of its flag.:
Plain red as in www.cse.gob.ni.
Plain red with initials as in www.ideay.net.ni.
Dov Gutterman, 26 February 2002

Two flags are shown for the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista. According to the official status of the party, the plain red flag should be the only official flag of the party. Here is my translation of the article of the status concerning the flag at www.plc.org.ni:
"Article 8 - Emblems
A. The flag: the main emblem of the party is made of a red rectangle with proportion 3:5. It should be hoisted permanently on the Party buildings, side by side with the national flag, as well as during actions and official ceremonies of the Party, according to the circumstances, places and opportunities to hoist it. The red colour identifies the PLC to its Flag, which should not bear letters, symbols and distinctive elements on its field or edges."
Ivan Sache, 5 November 2002

The Partido Liberal Constitucionalista was established in 1968 as the Movimiento Liberal Constitucionalista, a splinter of the Partido Liberal Nacionalista supporting Somoza's regime, and registered under its current name on 13 September 1983.
In 1989, the PLC was part of the Unión Nacional Opositora (UNO) alliance that ousted the FSLN from the power. Arnoldo Alemán was elected as Mayor of Managua for the 1990-1995 term and President of the Republic for the 1996-2001 term. He was succeeded in 2001 by former Vice-President Enrique Bolaño, who soon left the PLC and faced an alliance set up by Alemán and the FSLN.
In the 2016 general election, the PLC secured 14 out of the 92 seats at the National Assembly and another 3 at the Central American Parliament.

The most commonly used flag is plain red, as prescribed in the Statutes.

Partido Liberal Independiente

[Flag of Partido Liberal Independiente] image by Ivan Sache, 15 May 2021

The Partido Liberal Independiente (PLI)was established in 1944 by dissidents from Somoza's party, the Partido Liberal Nacionalista (PLN).
On 21 November 1956, the poet Rigoberto López Pérez, member of the PLI, shot to death President Anastasio Somoza, triggering a strong repression of the PLI.
The (re-founded) PLI was registered on 13 September 1983.

In 2016, the Electoral Supreme Court removed PLI leader Eduardo Montealegre upon request of Pedro Reyes, leader of a rival faction, who was empowered to name two new deputies at the National Assembly.

The flag of the PLI is described in Article 3 of the party's Statutes.
The flag of the PLI is red with a white five-pointed star charged with "PLI" in blue letters.
